Cargo terminology#

Term

Notes

TEU

Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit; standard container measure.

FEU

Forty-foot Equivalent Unit; one FEU = two TEU.

ULD

Unit Load Device; standard air-cargo container.

B/L

Bill of Lading.

HAWB / MAWB

House / Master Air Waybill.

HBL / MBL

House / Master Bill of Lading (sea).

Incoterms 2020

EXW, FCA, FOB, CFR, CIF, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, DDP.

HS code

6-digit Harmonized System tariff code; 8-10 digits per national extension.

EORI

Economic Operator Registration / Identification (EU).

Operator notes#

  • AIS / ADS-B coverage, port + airport approach areas are the densest sources of AIS / ADS-B traffic globally.

  • Customs, WCO HS codes are the universal commodity classification; cross-walk to local tariff schedules.

  • Sanctions screening, many sanctioned vessels operate via flag-of-convenience (Liberia, Marshall Islands) and shell-company chains; OFAC + OFSI publish indicators.

  • Drought risk, Panama Canal restrictions (2023-2024) rerouted significant transpacific traffic; future climate events likely.

  • Choke disruption, Suez (Ever Given 2021), Bab el-Mandeb (Houthi attacks 2024+) demonstrated single-point sensitivity.

  • Transhipment hubs, Singapore, Tanger Med, Tanjung Pelepas, Klang process containers without their cargo entering the local economy; useful detail for trade-flow analysis.
