Operator notes#
State-affiliated labeling, X / YouTube / Facebook tag many state-funded outlets (RT, Sputnik, CGTN, Press TV); the EU has restricted some since 2022.
Wire-service basis, a substantial fraction of “local” news worldwide is verbatim-AP or verbatim-Reuters; that’s not independent corroboration.
Translation pipeline, foreign-language content often reaches operator desks via the wire’s English desk; check the source-language original when stakes are high.
Paywalls, archive.today, archive.org, library access via Open Athens / institutional credentials are the routine workarounds (within ToS / law).
Ownership disclosure, many outlets publish ownership + funding pages; treat as a baseline cross-check.
OSINT verification, combine outlet + image + geo + RF + social cross-check; never single-source.
